Develop and participate in projects subsidized by public funding bodies in France and Europe, with a focus on sustainable solutions with a positive medium-term impact on the preservation and restoration of biodiversity.
The team is involved as partner in projects which are focused on biodiversity or nature-based (NbS) solutions in several ways:
– as part of the project’s core objective to restore or preserve biodiversity, or develop NBS,
– as part of the project objective to alleviate more generally the pressures on biodiversity, and which can base itself on enablers such as circular economy, resource sobriety or social innovation,
– in a project where IID-SII lead a biodiversity evaluation task.
NBRACER
To accelerate the transformation toward climate resilient regions that are safe, green, clean and healthy, NBRACER works with demonstrating and replicating regions in the Atlantic biogeographical area, across sectors and disciplines, experimenting and involving local communities.
The project visions and co-designs sustainable Nature-based Solutions (NbS) that are at one with the regional landscapes, upscaling these into coherent regional packages and building time and place specific adaptation pathways integrating local solutions and regional scales.
TERRACENE’s role: PMO, communication, dissemination engagement, networking, clustering and exploitation.
SOILCRATES
SOILCRATES is a project funded by HORIZON Research and Innovation to support the implementation of mission A Soil Deal for Europe-(HORIZON-MISS-2023-SOIL-01-08) focused on developing innovative solutions to enhance soil quality and promote sustainable soil management practices. Collaborating with leading experts, researchers, and living labs, SOILCRATES aims to address critical challenges related to soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem services.
TERRACENE’s role: Communication, dissemination, outreach, community engagement and clustering activities.
Through our participation in BIOSAFIRE and EXCEED, we engage in initiatives that redefine industrial and resource practices for a sustainable future across France and Europe. By facilitating connections between innovators, stakeholders, and markets, we help ensure that new materials, technologies, and resource strategies generate meaningful environmental and societal benefits. These projects illustrate our dedication to transforming human activity into a positive force for ecosystems, communities, and circular economies.
EXCEED
The project’s multi-metal/mineral, zero-waste mining-and-refining approach adopts a mineral-centric, integrated methodology via the application of a first-of-its-kind predictive and forensic geometallurgy, supported by enhanced in-line characterisation tools and the development of digital twins. Using four premier European pegmatite and RMG case studies, EXCEED develops, upscales & demonstrates cost-effective, sustainable and responsible extraction routes for recovering the CRMs and industrial minerals as by-products from Li-bearing hard-rock ores. A suite of CRMs will be extracted and refined, while diverse industrial minerals will be refined and valorised in low-carbon building materials.
TERRACENE’s role: PMO, exploitation and clustering workshops.
bIOSAFIRE
BIOSAFIRE Develops a new generation of bio-based and more sustainable flame retardants for industrial applications. New sustainable solutions are essential for transitioning industries to meet green goals. Flame retardants are critical for several applications, for example in the construction and automotive industries. However, current options are effective but not sustainable.
The EU-funded BIOSAFIRE project aims to provide an innovative, sustainable alternative by upgrading and unlocking the potential of lignins and tannins (natural flame retardants) for industrial applications. The project will expand and diversify available feedstocks in select pilot plants to produce bio-based flame retardants in powdered form. These will be demonstrated across five sectors, showcasing their competitive performance, safety, and sustainability.
TERRACENE’s role: Impact assesment.
Under the Sustainable Innovation Institute (IID-SII), we engage in collaborative efforts advancing the circular economy across Europe. Through our involvement in initiatives such as SCIRT, we contribute to reshaping how industries approach textile production, recycling, and resource management. We help ensure that project outcomes are effectively realized and shared with global audiences, amplifying impact and inspiring wider adoption. By facilitating connections through events, partnerships, and cross-sector collaboration, we foster innovation that drives sustainability from concept to implementation.
SCIRT
SCIRT (System Circularity & Innovative Recycling of Textiles) Coordinated by VITO, an independent Flemish research organisation in the cleantech and sustainable development sector, SCIRT, a three-year EU-funded project that brought together 18 partners from five different European countries. The SCIRT project aimed to demonstrate a complete textile-to-textile recycling system for discarded clothing, or post-consumer textiles, involving stakeholders throughout the value chain and focusing on the recycling of natural fibres, synthetic fibres and fibre blends. With the support of technical partners and research institutes, clothing brands Decathlon, Petit Bateau, Bel & Bo, HNST and Xandres, the project developed, prototyped and produced six types of apparel using recycled fibres.
The role of IID-SII (entity before Terracene): PMO, communication, dissemination and exploitation.
